About
It all started when…
The Warbirds Lacrosse Association is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that supports the sport of lacrosse in South Durham.
Warbirds is a parent led organization. It is closely linked to the Jordan High School Men’s team, providing financial and volunteer support to the JV and Varsity teams during the official (spring) season and enabling off-season (fall) activities which keep players engaged with the sport and team, actively developing their game.
Warbirds is also the team name for the JHS men’s fall ball lacrosse team.
What We Do
The primary purpose of Warbirds is to raise funds which supplement the budget of JHS men’s lacrosse - enriching the growth of our players and their experience as a team. While the JHS Athletic Department and JHS Athletic Booster Club (ABC) provide modest funds to all 24 school sports, including lacrosse, they come nowhere close to covering the costs for lacrosse. Thus, a group of lacrosse parents formed Warbirds to streamline fundraising to meet program goals without putting the full burden on players’ families. This is done through a series of annual events, special appeals and business sponsorships.
Warbirds also plans events and organizes things for the team, including game day volunteers, team dinners, an end-of-year banquet, senior night, and youth skills development clinics. Warbirds maintains the team rosters for families and ensures snacks and drinks for the team – the typical sports parent stuff. Warbirds manages communications (email listserv) to families throughout the year, keeping all informed of upcoming events and relaying messages from the coaches.
Warbirds also makes an annual donation to both the Duke and UNC Pediatric Leukemia family support programs, in honor of a former player, Trey Ennis.
FAQs
Q: Is Warbirds the same as the JHS Athletic Booster Club (ABC)?
A: No. ABC raises funds to support all 28 school sports while all money raised by Warbirds goes directly to men’s lacrosse. ABC pays for items such as the football stadium PA system, lawnmower, senior banners, and awards. That said, we ask that all lacrosse families join the ABC to contribute to the overall strength of Jordan’s athletic programs and culture. Some of the money you give to ABC comes back to our team, and strong LAX participation in ABC shows that we are not just in it for our own kids! www. jhsabc.org
Q: What is Warbirds money used for?
A: Warbirds pays for the team’s fall tournament participation, coach gifts, a fall sports trainer, and equipment such as balls, goals, radios, video cameras, helmets/decals, Warbirds pinnies, storage bins/buckets, and more. We also use some money to support middle school programs with equipment purchases. Warbirds covers the cost of playoff game travel and the end of year banquet for players and coaches, and pays a portion of the cost for new uniforms and Huddle software (used for player recruitment). Lacrosse is an expensive sport and we never want cost to be an impediment to interested players – therefore we maintain a hardship fund and also use Warbirds money to supplement some player equipment every year.
